Specifically in The Netherlands, an increase in working hours is a more obvious solution for the decline in labour supply due to the aging than an increase in the retirement age. High quality and affordable child care is assumed to stimulate an increase in the working hours for women, but personal preferences and societal expectation may prevent this outcome from happening. Aging might pose a bigger threat to our current welfare levels than anticipated if women also take a significant share in the care for dependent elderly people.
